Project #5

This set originally came from South Africa. The set has a love seat with two matching chairs, all with cane panels in the arms and in the backs. The cane panels all need work. Some have been pushed in, others have been replaced with a different size weave that didn't match and clearly wasn't original. The old spring cushions have lost their shape and need to be replaced. The coil spring base is sagging almost to the ground and needs new webbing as well as the springs being tied again by hand.

These are the four stages of deconstructing the chairs, so that we can start re-upholstering and re-caning.

The cane panels will be handwoven on one of the looms we keep here at the shop. This will give it a cleaner and more refined look as well as avoid any flaws in the materials, problems one comes into when using the prewoven "factory " cane webbing that can be purchased in rolls.  We are also able to reproduce vertually any pattern by weaving it ourselves.  These photos are the stages of hand caning.  There are six stages to complete a panel for this design of cane. After finishing the weaving the cane will be cut off of the loom and set into the sides and backs of the chairs and loveseat.

Here it shows the cane inserted into the sides and back of one of the chairs. Next is to stain the cane panels to match the furniture. Jute webbing creates the base for the coil springs. Once the springs are sewn into place  on the webbing they are tied together eight ways in a spider web like fashion. These coils are covered and support the cushions.

And finally the base is upholstered and the feather cushions are re-designed for the most comfort.
