Finished Project #9

This is a set of six Danish cord dining chairs. The product used here is a three ply twisted paper product. The factory finishes the cord with a wax so no treatment is needed after the weaving is done. The customer has the option to do an extra protection of a clear finish if they choose but the overall look becomes quite shiny. Most teak furniture is not shiny so the popular choice is to leave the product without the extra protection. These chairs really have very little wear on the cord but have become marked from the years of heavy use.

Below is the first stage of the weaving once the damaged cord is removed. These strands of cord woven vertically are called the "ribs". Care must be taken to get the correct tension at this stage. As the weave progresses the seat becomes more tight. If too much tension is created on the ribs at the beginning of the weaving then it becomes almost impossible to finish the seat. Having the ribs too tight will also put more stress on them once the seat is finished and the weight of the person is placed on the ribs rather than the horizontal "weavers" of the second stage.

Once the ribs are all in place then the "weavers" follow a basket pattern filling in the seat. This stage is quite often done with one long cord as you can see the spool in the picture on the left. The picture on the right shows the pattern developing and the seat starting to look like the original cord that was on the chairs when they came in.

Here we have the finished product looking lovely and new. No more stains and signs of use. The Danish Cord is a very strong product and should last many years.
