Project #3

This beautiful set of 6 chairs came in for restorations. The cane was very dry and brittle, the joints wiggly and in need of glue. The seats are a regular handwoven cane where the holes in the wood go all the way through the frame and the cane is threaded through these weaving right onto the chairs. The backs are also handwoven but the holes in the wood backs do not go  all the way through. In this case each strand of cane needs to be cut, woven and then pegged into the holes. It can be quite tricky and time consuming. Once the cane is in place a boarder is then woven to cover the holes and frame the cane. A stain is then used in order to match the cane to the chairs. A good cleaning, gluing and waxing followed and they turned out fit for a king. An interesting fact about restoring cane in antiques is that it does not reduce the appraised value of the piece like refinishing does. Apparently it is expected the cane would be replaced if it were to deteriorate or be damaged.
