Current Project #2

Here we have a beautiful bentwood rocker. There are a lot of reproductions of these rockers but this one is original. Bentwood means wood that has been cut then steamed. They bend the wood and leave it in molds to cool and dry. Once done the wood holds the shape of the bends. Furniture is then created out of the shapes creating beautiful lines. These rockers have a lovely long smooth rock unlike most others. The seat is handwoven cane finished with a boarder to hide the holes.

Below you can see the cane is giving way creating a buckle in the entire seat. The seat has to be removed and new cane woven directly on the seat one strand at a time. There are seven stages of weave before the seat is finished. Quite time consuming but well worth the effort. The picture on the right shows the wonder lines created with the bent wood.

We will post pictures and a bit of an explanation as we replace the cane in the seat with an final "after" picture when we are finished.
